Yes, that works! Excellent :-)
I've updated the post to make this addition and removed the stuff about disabling suspend. I've got a feeling I saw this years ago but did not realise it's significance. Thanks for pointing it out.

Suspend with a card in the left hand SD slot works fine if you add "mmc_core.removable=0" to the end of the default boot command (/etc/default/grub). Been doing this since about F13 and it solved all suspend problems.

Excellent! thank you very much, I'd wondered if there was an even more arcane solution available; and I was right.
I'll update the main post asap.

Unfortunately the files under /usr/share/polkit-1 will be overwritten by next upower package update.
A correct solution is to create a new config file under /etc/polkit-1/localauthority.
/etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/50-disable-suspend.pkla

[Disable Suspend]
Identity=unix-user:*
Action=org.freedesktop.upower.hibernate;org.freedesktop.upower.suspend
ResultAny=no

Brian; sorry for slooooow reply.

I originally did this but we now use a rsync based backup solution and synchronising the whole filestructure to a remote backup server is easier and faster for us. Also; the innobackupexec command operates on all the databases by default; it would need additional scripting to gzip each individual database in the backup.

However, it is fairly easy to do a gzip of the whole backup;

Insert something like this above the line with the '# Cleanup' comment
<code>echo "Creating gzipped archive of the backups"
/bin/tar czf $THISBACKUP.tar.gz $THISBACKUP
echo "Cleaning the backup dir"
rm -rf $THISBACKUP</code>

You will also need to modify the cleanup command:
<code>cd /tmp ; find $BACKUPDIR -maxdepth 1 -type f -mmin +$AGE -exec echo "removing: "{} \; -exec rm -f {} \;</code>

I have not tested the above, so test it if you do this.. I might add it as an option to version#2 when I do that.

Bob; No, sorry to say that I have not revisited this yet; I'm too busy fire-fighting other stuff and since my setup is running just fine I'm in 'If it ain't broke; don't fix it' mode.
However; An upgrade to the whole platform; going from RedHat5 to RedHat6, latest everything, and re-implementing the backup system using the same tools (unless something better shows up). This is planned as background task over the next few months, I'll update here once it is up-and-running.
